An explanation of the costs of using WhatsApp

Being one of the most popular mobile messengers with over 300 million users around the world, there are many people who are interested in using it. However, the question that most people ask is “is it free to use the app?” This is a question for which the answer might be a bit more complex than most people would imagine. This is why there are differing opinions as to whether it’s free or not.

Paying to use the app

Downloading the application is free, and you only need to visit your app store in order to do so. When you do this the first time, you will get a one year trial during which time you will not have to pay anything to use the app but will have access to all its features. However, according to the WhatsApp terms, you will subsequently need to pay to use the service once this year ends. To find out your payment info, you only need to go to your WhatsApp account settings. Here, you will find information such as when the trial expires, as well as options to purchase an extension if you are interested. Fortunately, the cost of doing this is very low, since you only need to pay $1 for a one year extension.

Your data charges

One other aspect of cost that you need to understand is the data charges. When you use WhatsApp, it uses your Internet connection to send and receive messages. Fortunately, the cost of sending texts via Internet is much lower compared to sending a text using your cell service provider. In some cases, this cost is negligible. The cost of sending and receiving the data depends on the cost of your Internet connection.

That said, using WhatsApp is one of the cheapest ways to communicate, even when you consider all the above.
